Overview
The original HMTS event (since 1987) and Hawaii's first cash-purse big-game tournament, fished over three days in late August out of Honokohau Harbor.
The Big Island Marlin Tournament started the series in 1987 and was the first Hawaii tournament to pay cash for tag-and-release. The base entry pays the three largest marlin, with daily optionals for both points and size.
Part of the Hawaii Marlin Tournament Series (HMTS), founded in 1987 and now operated by Marlin magazine's Marlin Group; series points accrue from tagged blue and striped marlin, large weighed blue marlin and weighed ahi. All HMTS events run out of Honokohau Harbor with registration and banquets at the Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club.
